HOW TO FIT INTO YOUR SKINNY JEANS AS FALL TEMPTATIONS START
By Brooke Cartus, AFAA Certified Personal Trainer and Spinning Coach
I hit my wall at the Giant Eagle Market District last week when I walked into the beer aiisle to pick up an innocent six pack of low calorie Mechelob Ultra and there it was: Samuel Adams Octoberfest. Yes fitness freaks, fall has arrived, and with it the myriad of fattening, frivolous, autumnal treats that makes almost everyone reach for chunky sweaters instead of fitted tee's. As you tackle beer tastings and wine tours, and comfort food temptations like meatloaf sandwiches and cheesy potatoes, let me remind you that you still have to fit into your pants. Sad, but true. Make spring maintenance less daunting next year...take these few bits of advice before you reach for another amber-colored beverage, and see some poundage shed.

EDIBLE BOWLS ARE NEVER GOOD! Every local joint in town as well as chains will be featuring fall favorites like this comforting treat. They reall get me when they fill the bread bowl with cream based soup....perfect. Just what you need after burning 300 calories on the eliptical. The bread bowl alone will push you passed 600 calories, and adding soup to the mix will get you upwards of 1000. Wow, and that's just your business lunch at Panera. Cut the bread and just stick with the soup! Save yourself the guilt the next morning during your workout.

CUT OUT PUMPKIN FLAVORED ANYTHING! Foodstuffs the normal fitness buffs would never even consider grabbing all of a sudden become a seasonal treat that some people indulge in daily. Here's a quick list of figures that will keep you reaching for peach tea while your friends unknowingly consume their daily calorie intake at one Starbucks trip.
Pumpkin Spice Frappucino: 400 cals
Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha: 500 cals (and that's WITHOUT whipped cream!)
Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin: 470 cals
Cinnamon Chip Scone: 480 cals
So what do you opt for? How about a regular coffee (you know, you've heard of that, right?) with a shot of sugar free flavor and a multigrain bagel plain and toasted. Dunk it in your coffee or better yet, enjoy it plain. Your waistline will thank you. -
REMEMBER HOLIDAY PARTIES ARE WEEKS AWAY! Everyone gives themselves New Years Resolutions but how about this year you give yourself a September one. We all know the feeling....two days from the Holiday Christmas party and none of your outfits fit. Men...that suit coat is a lilttle snug and you have to opt for a mock turtleneck. Women...that little black dress fits so snug you look like a holiday summer sausage with two legs sticking out of the bottom. Look your best and take the next 12 weeks to get there

CUT OUT THE MARGARITA'S OLE! You've partied all summer like you're in college, with day drinking and summer cocktails. It's time to buckle down and act your age....kind of. There are a ton of delicous fall treats that don't involve heavy cream! Spiced teas and whole grain cinnamon pancakes, roasted figs with goat cheese, fesh root vegetables like brussel sprouts and sweet potatoes that can be seasoned with dried rosemary and dill! Your taste buds can survive!!
I will tell you what I tell every client when a crisp new season starts: take this time to change up your fitness routine! Try a new class, buy one or two sessions, or take a 20 minute jog you never had the courage to take. The change of seasons brings so much to Columbus besides comfort food, it brings amazing scenery for outdoor activities and a cool fresh start from the stagnant heat of summer. Get moving, get healthy!!!
